The “D400” comes from EN 1433, the European standard that classifies linear drainage by the load it can safely carry. What the EN 1433 D400 Class Means
EN 1433 defines six load classes for linear drainage, each tied to the test load a channel and its grating must withstand. The classes run from A15, for pedestrian and cycle areas, through B125 for car parks, C250 for kerbside zones, D400 for carriageways, and up to E600 and F900 for the heaviest industrial and aviation duties. The number indicates the test force in kilonewtons: a drainage channel D400 is verified to a 400 kN load, equivalent to the wheel loads of normal road traffic including heavy goods vehicles.
Crucially, the rating applies to the complete system — channel body and grating together. Fitting an under-rated grating to a strong channel does not produce a genuine D400 installation; the assembly is only ever as strong as its weakest element. Where D400 Is the Right Choice
The D400 class is the standard for roads and carriageways carrying general traffic, including buses and lorries. Anywhere normal road vehicles run, D400 is usually the minimum appropriate rating.
It is equally important to recognise the limits of the class. Container terminals, dockside crane runs and airport aprons impose loads beyond D400, demanding E600 or F900 instead. Conversely, using D400 on a footpath would be needless expense. Matching the class to the genuine traffic — no more, no less — is the essence of good specification. Materials, Installation and Durability
A drainage channel D400 for road use is typically built from polymer concrete, often with reinforced or metal-protected edges, and topped with a ductile iron grating secured by a locking or boltless fixing. This combination resists the vertical, braking and shear forces that traffic imposes, while polymer concrete adds resistance to frost, fuel and de-icing salt — essential in the Baltic and Finnish climate.
Installation must match the class. The channel sits on a concrete haunch sized for D400 loading, with the grating set flush to the carriageway and joints detailed for the expected movement. Done correctly, the system carries traffic for decades; done poorly, even a correctly rated product can be undermined by the bedding around it.
